- You know how to use the brakes and the gears
- You have had occasional contact with bikes on paths 3-4m wide
- You can operate the GPS while riding on flat terrain
- You get off the bike when you are on a narrow descent
- You do not use cleats, or you have used them but are not entirely comfortable with their use
- You can ride for 2-3h/day for 2 (or more) consecutive days at a moderate and constant pace with rests
- You can manage a 400m uphill climb over the course of a day
- You do 2-3h/week of physical activity (walking, cycling, running, swimming, gym...)
- You are in average physical condition

- You have full control of the brakes and know which gear is appropriate for each situation
- You habitually ride on 3-4m wide dirt paths
- You can operate the GPS while descending
- You ride well on terrain with certain technical difficulty both up and downhill (narrow paths, rocks, branches, roots,...)
- You use cleats regularly, but you need to look at the pedals in order to clip in; you clip out instinctively when descending
- You can ride for >6h/day for 2 (or more) consecutive days at a fast pace
- You can manage a >1,500m uphill climb over the course of a day
- You do >5h/week of aerobic exercise or 2-3 days/week of high-intensity cycling
- You are in top physical condition
- You know your body well enough to know when to stop or let up your pace
- You have participated in competitions/races
